Victoria Longely

VictoriaLongleyIt is with great sadness that State Theatre Company advises that our friend and actor Victoria Longley died on Sunday 29 August 2010 after losing her battle with  cancer.

She worked extensively in the entertainment industry with television credits such as Murder Call, Water Rats, Wildside, Farscape and All Saints. Her film credits include Diana and Me and Turtle Beach. Her portrayal of Alice Tanner in the film Celia won her the AFI Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1988 and she was nominated twice more in 1986 for The More Things Change… and in 1994 for Best Actress in Talk. She also worked with many of the major theatre companies around Australia including Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company and Queensland Theatre Company.

Her most critically acclaimed performance was working with us in 2005 in The Goat, Or Who is Sylvia? (State Theatre Company/Company B Belvoir) as Stevie, a woman coping with the revelation that her husband has fallen in love with a goat. Longley’s passionate portrayal earned her a Helpmann Award ® nomination and won her a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Actress in 2006.

Victoria last appeared on stage in King Lear as Goneril alongside John Gaden for us in 2009. She was due to reprise the role earlier this year with Bell Shakespeare but had to resign due to illness.

Victoria Longley will be sadly missed by all of us at State Theatre Company.
