Presented by State Theatre Company of South Australia in association with Adelaide Festival
By Leo Tolstoy & adapted by Sue Smith
A tale of paranoia, jealousy and revenge, Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata provides rich pickings for a bravura one man show.
After meeting and marrying his wife, Pozdnyshev experiences both passionate love and agonising conflict. What follows is a story of sexual jealousy, murder—and Beethoven.
First published in 1889, Tolstoy’s short story, inspired by Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No 9, was promptly censored by the Russian authorities, labelling the writer a sexual and moral pervert.
An extraordinary examination of the extremities of the human psyche, The Kreutzer Sonata is virtuosic story-telling of immense power and intensity.
In his debut as State Theatre Company’s new Artistic Director Geordie Brookman will team with celebrated writer Sue Smith (Mabo, Bastard Boys, RAN, Brides of Christ) and Australian film and theatre legend Barry Otto (Bliss, Strictly Ballroom) to create a literary and live musical feast, including the famous sonata, in the atmospheric surrounds of our Scenic Workshop right in the heart of State Theatre.
*Please note, due to some sound conflicts in other nearby venues, the performance of The Kreutzer Sonata on Sunday 10 March will now be at 8pm instead of 7pm. All other performance times in the season remain the same.
Please note that Barry Otto has withdrawn from The Kreutzer Sonata suffering from exhaustion. Talented local Renato Musolino has accepted that challenge to take over the role and although the production will not be as originally intended, we are confident that Tolstoy's narrative along with the spectacular scenery and amazing audio visuals will deliver a thoroughly absorbing experience.
BASS will refund anyone who chooses not to attend the production. We ask that people who wish to receive a refund return their tickets to BASS prior to the performance. Please send your tickets attention Gerry Farror, Reply Paid, BASS Refunds, GPO Box 1269, Adelaide SA 5001 or call Gerry on 08 8205 2422. (Please note that refunds can not be issued post performance). Elizabeth Layton (Please note, Lachlan Bramble will be performing for the preview on Saturday 23rd February)
"Musolino's performance is expertly managed. He reads with complete precision, maintaining the cadence and resisting any urge to riff or improvise. He narrates the frenzied, cruel climax of the killer's tale with especially compelling effect."
Murray Bramwell, The Australian
"Musolino's mellifluous voice cascades to the lyrical flow of Sue Smith's new adaptation of the Tolstoy novella, delivering an acrobatic display of emotional dexterity as Pozdnyshev teeters on the tightrope between love and hate...It's a triumph in the face of remarkable adversity."
Patrick McDonald, The Advertiser
"The set’s mirror effect has a subtle beauty to it. In fact, what comes to mind during this performance is a persistent sense of subtle beauty — it’s there in Geordie Brookman’s direction, Geoff Cobham’s set and lighting, Thom Buchanan’s drawings, Sue Smith’s adaptation, Renato Musolino’s delivery, Gabriella Smart’s piano and musical direction, Elizabeth Layton’s violin, and in it’s own way, there is a subtle beauty in Leo Tolstoy’s original story."
Mick Searles, Aussie Theatre
"The final word...was met with loud applause, yelling and stomping of feet in the packed venue, signalling a successful audience reception of this ambitious project. The production is both entertaining and thought-provoking."
Daniela Kaleva, Australian Stage Online
"All I can say is bravo, because Mr Musolino acquits himself admirably. Despite having a script in hand, he manages to deliver a powerhouse performance of great subtlety and finesse. Five minutes into the piece the script has become merely an unimportant prop in the production."
Tony Busch, Adelaide Theatre Guide
"It’s a production of unmistakeable quality. Renato Musolino deserves much praise for his performance."
Ben Nielson, Kryztoff
"Musolino’s solo performance is engaging and laden with emotion. He possesses the much sought-after craft to swiftly mould himself into an array of characters, with clear delineation between each...it’s no wonder he received a standing ovation when the play concluded."
Patricia O'Loughlin, On the Record
"The Kreutzer Sonata is a showcase of extremely talented artists whose efforts weave seamlessly in this new telling of Tolstoy’s novella...a compelling piece of theatre."
Peter Beaglehole, Stage Milk
"...something magical and miraculous - the show for which Festival 2013 will be vividly remembered."
Samela Harris, The Barefoot Review
